Among states which have sales taxes, Colorado has the lowest rate (2.9%). All other states have a rate of at least 4.0%. Five states (California, Indiana, Mississippi, Rhode Island and Tennessee) have rates equal or above 7.0%. California is the state which has the highest tax rate (7.25%).

## How to calculate sales tax?

Learn how to calculate sales tax by following these examples:

### 1) You buy a item on Ebay for 4500 dollars and pay 7.5 % (percent) in tax. What is the tax on it and what is the total price (including tax)?

• Firstly, divide the tax rate by 100: 7.5/100 = 0.075 (tax rate as a decimal). Note: to easily divide by 100, just move the decimal point two spaces to the left.
• Now, find the tax value by multiplying tax rate by the before tax price:
tax = 4500 × 0.075
tax = 337.5 (tax value rouded to 2 decimals)
• Add tax to the before tax price to get the final price:
The final price including tax = 4500 + 337.5 = 4837.5

### Sales tax Formula (Final Price)

Final price including tax = before tax price × (1 + tax rate (%) / 100)
or,
Final price including tax = before tax price × (1 + tax rate)
(tax expressed as a decimal)

### 2) You buy a product for 4837.5 dollars with tax included. You know that the tax rate at your state is 7.5%. What is the tax value?

a) Before Tax Price

• Divide the tax rate by 100. A tax of 7.5 percent was added to the product to make it equal to 4837.5. So, divide 7.5 by 100 to get 0.075.
• Add one to the percentage: 1 + 0.075 = 1.075.
• Divide the final amount by the value above to find the original amount before the tax was added. In this example: 4837.5 / 1.075 = 4500. This is the price excluding taxes.

b)Tax Value

• The Tax Value is equal to the Final Price minus the Before Tax Price, so,
• Tax Value = 4837.5 - 4500 = 337.5.

### Sales tax Formula (Before Tax Price)

Before Tax Price (\$) = Final price / (1 + tax rate(%) / 100)
or,
Before Tax Price (\$) = Final price / (1 + tax rate)
(tax expressed as a decimal)
