How to calculate sales tax?
Learn how to calculate sales tax by following these examples:
1) You buy a item on Ebay for 230 dollars and pay 7 % (percent) in tax. What is the tax on it and what is the total price (including tax)?
- Firstly, divide the tax rate by 100: 7/100 = 0.07 (tax rate as a decimal). Note: to easily divide by 100, just move the decimal point two spaces to the left.
-
Now, find the tax value by multiplying tax rate by the before tax price:
tax = 230 × 0.07
tax = 16.1 (tax value rouded to 2 decimals)
-
Add tax to the before tax price to get the final price:
The final price including tax = 230 + 16.1 = 246.1
Sales tax Formula (Final Price)
2) You buy a product for 246.1 dollars with tax included. You know that the tax rate at your state is 7%. What is the tax value?
a) Before Tax Price
- Divide the tax rate by 100. A tax of 7 percent was added to the product to make it equal to 246.1. So, divide 7 by 100 to get 0.07.
- Add one to the percentage: 1 + 0.07 = 1.07.
- Divide the final amount by the value above to find the original amount before the tax was added. In this example: 246.1 / 1.07 = 230. This is the price excluding taxes.
b)Tax Value
- The Tax Value is equal to the Final Price minus the Before Tax Price, so,
- Tax Value = 246.1 - 230 = 16.1.
